Under Bed Storage Drawer

Having enough storage is just not possible, which is what makes this DIY Under Bed Drawer such a great project. What makes it even better is it is such an easy DIY project that even with no experience you can knock this out in no time!

This is such an easy way to get some extra storage from a space that usually just collects dust. While I did a stain interior and white painted exterior on my under bed storage drawer, you may just want to keep it plain wood since you won’t be able to see it, totally up to you!

I hope you enjoy the free plans I provide and they prove to be easy to follow. Thanks for hanging out with BuildingwithKinfolk.com

Under Bed Storage Drawer Plans

The plans for the Under Bed Storage Drawer are below, and I think you will find it beyond simple to build! If you do build this (or any variation) please shoot us a photo, we would love to see it!

Tools Needed

Supplies Needed

(1) ½” x 4′ x 8′
1″ Brad Nails
Wood Glue
Casters
Finishing Supplies

Cut List

  • (2) ½” x 7½” x 40″
  • (2) ½” x 7½” x 23″
  • (1) ½” x 40″ x 24″

Step 1 (Optional)

Before we start throwing the pieces together, we are going to cut a half oval handle on the front of one of our 7½” x 40″ boards. While this is optional for the under bed storage drawer, it does add a nice little touch. The easiest way to do this is to use a large paint can and put about ¼” of it over the top-middle of the board. Once you have your line, use a jigsaw and give your under bed storage drawer a nice handle. If you don’t want to do this, we won’t judge you, I promise!

Step 2

Now it’s time to start putting the side together on the under bed storage drawer. The 23″ boards will be the sides, and will but into the 40″ boards. For each joint, you will want to use glue, and then 3-4 nails. If you don’t have a nail gun you can use 1″ wood screws, just make sure you pre-drill first. If you are new to building and haven’t got to check out the Glu-Bot yet, make sure to check out my review. It is a simple and cheap tool that is great for projects like this! Tangent over, back to the build!

When you are doing this is will be helpful to have an extra pair of hands, or some clamps. You want to make sure you nail gun is lines up just right so you don’t have nails pop out the side. If that does happen, don’t fret! Grab a pair of pliers and pull it out. You can wood fill that later and no one will know! Once you have each joint attached grab a rag and clean up any extra glue coming from the joints.

Step 3

Your DIY under bed storage drawer is almost done, and then you can start showing it off to all your friends, just make sure to send us a photo because we would love to see it! With all the sides attached, let’s flip over the drawer and place the large 40″x24″ board on top (or bottom technically since you have it flipped upside down). Once you know everything lines up right and you don’t need to do any additional trimming, then apply glue and nail the base down to the sides.

Step 4

Before we think about adding our casters, let’s go ahead and at very least sand down the under bed storage drawer getting rid of any rough edges. The last thing we want to do is reach under to pull the drawer out and grab a splinter instead! If you want to paint or stain it, this is the time for that as well. For my project, I used white paint on the bottom, sides, and top, and I used Minwax Special Walnut on the inside. If you do this a little painter’s tape will help you get clean lines!

Step 5

Once your finish is all dry and you have sanded out all the rough edges, let’s turn over your under bed storage drawer and attach your casters. Because we are using ½” plywood here, you need to make sure the screws sent with your casters aren’t going to go all the way through. If they are, then grab some smaller wood screws, or you can cut a small square from your extra boards and place one under each caster. On mine, I used a smaller screw along with a small lock washer.
